What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) most often occurs after an experience that is, or is perceived to be, threatening to the person. Individuals will relive the experience, have intense fear or helplessness, and feel like they are on alert or find themselves avoiding certain situations for a period of time. Most often a PTSD diagnosis occurs with military personnel, first responders, motor vehicle accidents, and individuals who’ve experienced sexual assaults.
The Veteran’s Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program at One to One Wellness offers a 3-phase, evidence-based approach to pain management. It is designed to empower veterans with tools and strategies to reduce the impact of pain and improve their overall well-being.
Interdisciplinary Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program
The Interdisciplinary Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program at One to One Wellness offers a 3-phase, evidence-based approach to managing chronic, non-cancer-related pain. The goal is to reduce the impact of pain, restore function, and support long-term well-being through personalized care and self-management strategies.
This year-long program is ideal for individuals whose chronic pain significantly interferes with daily life and function. It is delivered by an interdisciplinary team including nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, psychologists, massage therapists, osteopaths, and sleep medicine specialists.
Program Structure
Phase 1: Understanding Pain (Weeks 1–12)
Participants are introduced to the science of pain, develop foundational self-management skills, and work to reframe unhelpful thought patterns that may exacerbate pain.
Phase 2: Skill Building (Weeks 13–24)
Focuses on improving strength, mobility, and daily function while integrating individualized pain management strategies.
Phase 3: Maintenance & Transition (Weeks 25–52)
Emphasizes long-term success through routine development, self-care planning, and connections to community resources such as YMCA LiveWell and the People in Pain Network.
Assessment & Customization
Participants are regularly assessed using validated tools such as the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) to measure progress and tailor care. The program is flexible in pacing and can be adjusted to support early transitions when appropriate.
Who It’s For
This program is designed to serve a wide range of individuals referred through healthcare providers, workplace injury boards, or veterans’ organizations. It can be customized to meet the unique needs of:
- Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP veterans
- Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) clients
- Individuals referred through primary care or specialist providers
Eligibility & Exclusions
- Eligibility: Adults with chronic pain (3+ months) that interferes with function and daily life. Participants must be medically stable and able to actively engage in the program.
- Exclusions: Active substance dependence, unmanaged psychiatric conditions, or urgent surgical needs.

How can Physiotherapy Help with PTSD?
Musculoskeletal pain is very common in individuals who are experiencing PTSD symptoms. It has been cited that up to 77% of military personnel diagnosed with PTSD have chronic low back pain (1).
Physiotherapy can help in a variety of ways. A multidisciplinary team is key for success if you’re experiencing pain and have a PTSD diagnosis The first item would be to ensure we are working with your other healthcare providers, including your Doctor and Psychologist.

Your appointment is completely dedicated to you in a private treatment room. Our Physiotherapists will take time to educate you on how various factors in your life, including life experience, can contribute to your current pain experience. It is important to know when we are experiencing stress, our muscles become more tense. If tension remains over prolonged periods, this may reduce mobility and blood flow to areas that may become painful. Finding ways to reduce overall stress and how our bodies respond can be a key factor in your recovery.
Depending on your individual comfort level, we can take a variety of approaches to help. This may include a combination of the following:
Hands Off Techniques
- This includes coaching you to perform various calming exercises to reduce tension
- Pain Education
- Supervised Strength Training with your Physiotherapist
Hands-On Techniques
- Using various gentle mobility and mobilization techniques to reduce tension.
- If these approaches are found helpful, Massage Therapy and/or Osteopathy may be recommended
You and Your Physiotherapist will then come up with a home mobility routine that works for you. These exercises, which are often calming, can help you teach your tissues to relax. (Click HERE for an example). To help you further, you and your Physiotherapist can create a strength training routine to help manage PTSD symptoms and pain.
