A Closer Look at Chronic Pain

Beyond physical discomfort, living with chronic pain affects both the mind and body. Many people experience it as an unending and invisible weight. While the intensity of the pain itself can vary, it never truly leaves.

Chronic pain is  defined as lasting longer than three months and persisting beyond normal healing times.

Unlike acute pain, which serves as the body’s warning system, chronic pain lingers and serves no clear biological purpose. It can stem from a variety of conditions, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or past injuries, and may even exist without an identifiable source.

Pain science tells us that chronic pain is not just about physical damage or injury; it’s deeply tied to the way the nervous system processes pain signals. Persistent pain can alter how the brain and spinal cord interpret these signals, amplifying discomfort even when there’s no clear reason for the body to be in this distress.

This layered complexity is part of what makes chronic pain challenging to treat, but not impossible to manage.

Nurse Practitioners vs Registered Nurses

Along with physicians, mental health professionals, and physiotherapists, nurse practitioners (NP) are a valuable component of your healthcare team. They bring a unique expertise in managing chronic health concerns, such as pain.

Part of what makes working with NPs so helpful is that their skills and experience go further than the general care registered nurses (RN) provide. NPs are primary care providers who adopt a holistic model of care to help diagnose, prescribe, treat, and manage chronic and acute health conditions.

One isn’t necessarily better than the other. Nurse practitioners and RNs just differ in the type of care that they provide.

Scope of Practice

NPs have advanced education and training, often holding masters’ or doctoral degrees.

This allows them to diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests, and create detailed treatment plans, providing a level of autonomy that complements what physicians offer.

Pain Management Expertise

The training program for NPs includes clinical medicine and holistic, patient-centered care.

This means greater collaboration with the rest of your healthcare team and tailored treatment approaches that go beyond prescribing medication.. This can be incredibly valuable for people with chronic pain.

Holistic Care

Managing chronic health conditions isn’t always as simple as taking prescription medication and going about your day. Health consumes every aspect of your wellness.

NPs focus on the interplay between emotional, mental, and physical health by acknowledging the multifaceted nature of chronic pain. A holistic approach to health means looking at the whole picture, not at a single part.

How Nurse Practitioners Help Manage Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is personal and relative and not a monolithic experience.

Part of what some people find frustrating when trying to manage chronic pain is the trial-and-error process. What works for one person may not work for another.

Medication might ease one person’s symptoms but cause significant side effects for someone else. Similarly, physical therapy could improve mobility for some, while others may find it ineffective. This process often takes time and requires adjustments along the way, making it difficult to stay optimistic.

A holistic approach to care can offer a solution, pushing NPs to take an in-depth look at each patient.

This includes understanding a person’s history, physical health, emotional well-being, and life goals to create an effective and sustainable care plan unique to each patient.

Multimodal Treatment

The human body is complex. When its systems aren’t working as they should, especially for longer periods, accessing different areas of wellness, not just one, can make a significant difference.

Take mental health, for example. Medication can help, but when we combine it with regular movement, a balanced diet, mental health support, and social activities, people can really experience a positive difference.

Effective chronic pain management takes a similar approach. Nurse practitioners focus on multimodal treatments (multiple strategies), which can include:

  • Medications: Prescribing appropriate medications while monitoring for side effects and efficacy.
  • Physiotherapy referrals: Collaborating with physiotherapists to improve mobility and reduce pain triggers.
  • Counselling and cognitive-behavioral therapy: Addressing the mental and emotional challenges of chronic pain.
  • Lifestyle modifications: Guiding better sleep hygiene, nutrition, and exercise routines that promote overall wellness.

Connecting all these aspects of the wellness wheel can help build sustainable habits.

However, the process can take time. NPs will check in on your progress and make any necessary adjustments until they find the balance that aligns with your needs.
