Veterans’ Health Services
Our veterans’ health services include assessments and medical, mental health, and rehabilitation services.
- Pensioned condition assessments: We provide third-party assessments when applying for disability benefits or health care programs as a veteran pensioner.
- Medical services (POC 6): Our physicians and nurse practitioners provide primary care services, including medical services that may be covered under POC 6.
- Mental health services: Our interdisciplinary team includes psychologists and a sleep medicine psychiatrist who provide support and treatment for mental health conditions and sleep disorders.
- Rehabilitation services: Physiotherapists and occupational therapists, who assist with improving mobility, reducing pain, and adapting environments to better suit abilities. Our team also includes osteopaths and massage therapists who can assist with chronic pain conditions, muscle tension, and nervous system relaxation.
Veterans’ Pain Management Program
Our Veterans’ Pain Management Program is focused on supporting the needs of individuals who have served in the Canadian military or RCMP and are dealing with chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and sleep disorders, such as insomnia.
Our Veterans’ Pain Management Program is a year-long program divided into 3 phases. We follow an evidence-based approach aimed at reducing the impact of pain, restoring function, and supporting long-term health and well-being through personalized care and self-management strategies.
Our program follows this overall structure:
- Phase 1: Understanding Pain (Weeks 1–12)
Participants are introduced to the science of pain, develop foundational self-management skills, and work to reframe unhelpful thought patterns that may exacerbate pain. - Phase 2: Skill Building (Weeks 13–24)
Participants focus on improving strength, mobility, and daily function throughout phase 2, while integrating individualized pain management strategies. - Phase 3: Maintenance and Transition (Weeks 25–52)
Phase 3 emphasizes long-term success through routine development, self-care planning, and connections to community resources such as YMCA LiveWell and the People in Pain Network.
Participants are regularly assessed using validated tools such as the pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) and the pain self-efficacy questionnaire (PSEQ) to measure progress and tailor care. The program is flexible in pacing and can be adjusted to support early transitions when appropriate.
What Is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) most often occurs after an experience that is, or is perceived to be, threatening to the person. Individuals may relive the experience, have intense fear or helplessness, and feel like they are on alert or find themselves avoiding certain situations for a period of time. A PTSD diagnosis may occur with military personnel, first responders, motor vehicle accidents, individuals who’ve experienced sexual assaults, and countless other traumatic experiences.
The Veterans’ Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program at One to One Wellness offers a 3-phase, evidence-based approach to pain management. It is designed to empower veterans with tools and strategies to reduce the impact of pain and improve their overall well-being.
How Can Physiotherapy Help with PTSD?
It is very common for individuals with PTSD symptoms to experience chronic pain. Physiotherapy can help in a variety of ways, in conjunction with other healthcare providers, including your doctor and psychologist. An interdisciplinary team is key to success if you’re experiencing pain and have a PTSD diagnosis.
Your physiotherapist can take time to explain how various factors in your life, including life experience, can contribute to your current pain experience. They will assist you with reducing tension, increasing mobility and blood flow, and rebuilding functional strength as needed. Finding ways to reduce overall stress and how your body responds can be a key factor in your recovery.
