What Is Psychology?
Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour. Psychologists assess thoughts, brain functions, personalities, and emotions, and how they relate to a person’s physical, mental, and social state, along with overall well-being.
Our psychologists are trained and experienced in working with people from various backgrounds. We’re pleased to provide psychological services to help you cope with your situation, reduce symptoms, improve relationships, boost performance, and enhance your general health.
We invite you to read our psychologists’ biographies before booking your consultation, to get to know our practitioners a little better.
How Can Psychology Help Me?
Psychology is applicable in all areas of life. It can help protect people from harm, both physical and emotional, by equipping them with the mental capacity to handle triggers they can encounter at any time. Psychology can also help to enhance mental and emotional resilience while dealing with a chronic condition, such as chronic pain.
Here are some ways in which psychology can be beneficial for individuals or groups:
- Better self-understanding. Psychological therapies help you to better understand your personality, behavioural patterns, and intentions. You learn why you react, think, decide, or move the way you do. You’ll also learn more about your urges and how to have better control or power over them.
- Improved sense of motivation. Psychology helps you to understand your motivations and why you commit to certain goals or outcomes. This can help you make better decisions or accomplish bigger goals in the future.
- Enhanced empathy and communication. By gaining more insight into both verbal and nonverbal communication, you’re able to pay more attention to others’ cues. You may also learn how to communicate your own wants and needs more effectively. Together, this can bridge or enhance your relationships and connections.
- Provide a diagnosis. When appropriate, psychologists can conduct formal assessments and provide diagnoses of mental health disorders. In certain cases, a diagnosis can help an individual receive accommodations, support, or treatment beyond counselling that can improve daily life.
- Facilitate accommodations. Our psychologists can help facilitate and support time away from work or school when needed and can connect you with appropriate supports or access necessary accommodations.
Our psychologists employ evidence-based techniques to help you achieve your goals and work through mental health challenges. One of these approaches is Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic model that helps patients reach a better understanding of personal relationships and focuses on the 8 Cs: confidence, calm, compassion, courage, creativity, clarity, curiosity, and connectedness.
What Can I Expect from Virtual Psychology Treatments?
A psychological treatment may also be called psychotherapy, counselling, or talk therapy. Anyone can benefit from it, including children. During sessions, you talk to a psychologist and learn more about your emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and feelings.
At One to One Wellness, our psychology appointments are delivered virtually, meaning you will meet with your psychologist over the phone or via a video call via the Jane App. You will share your contact information when scheduling your appointment, and your provider will connect with you at your designated appointment time.
Your treatment plan will include an initial visit, an assessment, and subsequent treatment sessions.
Your initial consultation provides you and your psychologist with time to get to know one another and determine if it’s the right fit.
Prior to your consultation, you’ll fill out forms with details about your health history. During your consultation, you’ll discuss the information included in the forms and share additional details about your emotional, mental, and physical health. Your psychologist will also share information with you about the treatment approach that will be used and set some goals for your treatment plan.
It may take a few visits for your therapist to fully understand the problem, its effects and causes, and determine which treatment options they see fit. Therefore, the assessment period may take place over multiple sessions.
Once your assessment has been completed, you’ll attend regular sessions at intervals agreed upon by you and your psychologist.
Your psychologist provides a judgment-free environment for you to share your thoughts, concerns, and feelings. The exact treatment methods, advice, and strategies used or recommended during your sessions will be tailored to your individual needs.
Mental Wellness Is Important for Overall Health
Your mental well-being is an important component of your overall health. Living under constant stress can be hard on your physical body, much like living with chronic pain can put strain on your mental state.
Our whole body approach at One to One Wellness takes a look at your overall well-being, including your physical, mental, and emotional health. Working with a psychologist can help you process built-up events, emotions, or unspoken words and lighten your mental load.
Your treatment plan will be individualized, as will your experiences. The time it takes to see improvements after starting sessions is highly personal, so be sure not to put undue pressure on yourself to see changes. If you have any questions about the duration of your treatment or the expected outcomes, ask your psychologist directly.
To get started, request a free 15-minute consultation with one of our psychologists. We look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey to better wellness.
