Type 2 diabetes occurs when your pancreas cannot make enough insulin, or cannot use the insulin that it makes properly. Insulin is a hormone that regulates our blood sugar. Part of the treatment for managing type 2 diabetes is adhering to a healthy diet. Specifically, managing the carbohydrates (sugar) in your diet, eating a variety of healthy foods, eating at regular times, and including foods high in fibre can help manage your blood sugar levels. It's often useful to familiarize yourself with the glycemic index, but talk to your doctor and dietitian to develop a care plan that is individual to you.
